Start a business in Kenya

Anza biashara Kenya

From choosing a business structure to opening your first bank account — a complete guide to registering and starting a business in Kenya.

1

Choose your business structure

Decide whether to register as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or non-profit. Most small businesses start as sole proprietorships — simplest to register, no minimum capital required. An LLC protects your personal assets if the business incurs debts.

2

Register your business name

Search for name availability and register your business with the Business Registration Service (BRS) through eCitizen. You'll need your National ID, KRA PIN, and pay a registration fee (KES 950 for a sole proprietorship, KES 10,650 for a company).

3

Register for a KRA PIN

Register your business for a KRA PIN on iTax. If you're registering a company, you'll need a separate business KRA PIN distinct from your personal PIN. This is required for filing taxes and is needed for most business transactions.

4

Register for NHIF and NSSF

If you plan to employ staff, you are legally required to register them for NHIF (health insurance) and NSSF (pension). Register your business as an employer with both funds through eCitizen. Monthly contributions apply per employee.

Get your county business permit

Apply for a Single Business Permit (SBP) from your county government. This is required for any business operating from a physical premises. Apply on your county government website or in person at the County Revenue offices. Fees vary by county and business type.

6

Open a business bank account

Open a dedicated business bank account using your Certificate of Incorporation, KRA PIN certificate, and business permit. Most Kenyan banks offer business accounts with M-PESA Paybill or Till Number integration — essential for receiving payments.
