Accessibility statement for GOV.KE
This statement applies to content published on gov.ke and its subdomains. It was prepared on 1 March 2026 and last reviewed on 1 May 2026.
Our commitment
GOV.KE is committed to making this website accessible to everyone, regardless of disability or the technology used to access it. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA, and to the requirements of the Kenya ICT Policy 2019.
This platform has been designed using the GOV.KE Design System, which incorporates accessibility best practices including sufficient colour contrast ratios, keyboard navigability, screen reader compatibility, and responsive layouts for mobile devices.
Conformance status
Partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA
Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard. We are actively working to resolve all known issues.
GOV.KE was last assessed against WCAG 2.2 using a combination of automated tools (axe DevTools, Google Lighthouse) and manual testing with NVDA screen reader on Windows and VoiceOver on macOS and iOS.
How accessible GOV.KE is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- !Some older PDF documents (linked from publication pages) do not have tagged headings and may not be fully readable by screen readers — we are working with departments to replace these with accessible versions.
- !Some third-party external platforms linked from GOV.KE (such as county portals) may not meet WCAG 2.2 standards — these are outside our direct control.
- !Video content on some pages does not yet have audio descriptions — captions are available on all new videos.
- !Some interactive filter components (on the News and Publications pages) do not yet announce state changes to screen readers — this is being fixed.
What we do well
- ✓All page content can be navigated using a keyboard alone (Tab, Enter, Escape, arrow keys)
- ✓All images have descriptive alt text or are marked as decorative
- ✓Colour contrast meets or exceeds WCAG 2.2 Level AA (minimum 4.5:1 for normal text)
- ✓All form inputs have associated visible labels
- ✓Skip-to-content links are present on all pages
- ✓The site is fully responsive and usable on mobile devices including low-cost Android phones
- ✓Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of functionality
- ✓Focus indicators are visible for all interactive elements
